EDU 301 Wk 2 – Signature Assignment: A Study of American Education
It would be almost impossible to understand today’s education system without having knowledge of our country’s educational past. Our nation’s history of education shows many examples of how political forces, special-interest groups, social class, religion, and cultural and ethnic diversity have influenced our schools. As a teacher, it is extremely important to be familiar with the past events to help you effectively evaluate proposals for change.
This is a 2-part assignment that reinforces an understanding of the important events that have influenced our education system and makes connections from past events to current practices. Complete Parts 1 and 2 below.
Part 1: Historical Timeline
Create a 1-page timeline, using a software such as Canva or another online resource of your choice, to communicate the major government mandates (e.g., laws or policies) that have influenced the American education system in the last 100 years.
Include a minimum of 6 entries, each representing a major government mandate, and provide the date (or time range), an explanation of what prompted the mandate, and a description of the outcome(s) of the mandate.
Part 2: Connecting History to Current Education Paper
Write a 700- to 875-word descriptive paper that connects the historical foundations to the current issues and trends in the U.S. education system.
Address the following:
- Connection between issues and important events and mandates
- Impact of timeline events and government mandates on teaching and learning
- Influence of timeline events on your decision to become a teacher
- What you hope to contribute to the field of education
- Current issues and trends influencing the U.S. education system
- Effects of current issues and trends on teachers, students, and families
- Your plan for keeping up to date on the latest trends and technological advancements in education
