ENV 431 Wk 4 – Waste and Land Use Policies

This week, you will research and create either a land-use executive summary or a nuclear waste disposal briefing. You must describe hazardous waste and land management issues, explain hazardous waste and land management policy development, and analyze policy proposals for hazardous waste and land management.

Select and complete one of the following assignments:

Option 1: Land Use Executive Summary

You are the new health and safety associate director at a hazardous waste company. Your company aims to purchase land for a waste facility. To obtain state government approval for the land-use, you must submit an executive summary. Your summary must brief local businesses and government leaders on your proposed land purchase and the intended adherence to hazardous waste policies.

Write a 1,050- to 1,400-word (in the body of the paper) executive summary for the environmental health and safety director at a hazardous waste company. Include the following in your executive summary:

  • Analyze the hazardous waste and land management policy currently in effect.
  • Describe the potentially hazardous waste and land management concerns for your community.
  • Describe the current political outlook for hazardous waste and land management policy in your state. Describe the theories and past policies that influence current approaches.
  • Describe the intended outcomes of the policies, and explain how these policies may affect change.
  • Analyze the possible economic, social, and environmental outcomes of the policies.
  • List potential hazardous waste and land management policy goals the company may work toward and include strategies for implementation.

Format your executive summary consistent with APA guidelines.

Option 2: Nuclear Waste Disposal Briefing

You are an aide for the recently elected junior U.S. senator of your state. Recently, a proposal has been brought to the Senate floor proposing the reopening of a site for nuclear waste storage at Yucca Mountain in Nevada. Fellow senators who are divided in their support for this proposal have approached your senator and have asked you to brief him on the situation so that he may decide whether he should support the reopening of the Yucca Mountain facility.

Create a 15- to 20-slide (not including the title slide and references slide) Microsoft® PowerPoint® briefing for your senator. Include the following:

  • Available storage options for nuclear waste
  • An explanation of how nuclear waste is currently stored in your state; if your state does not have nuclear reactors, research a neighboring state
  • Arguments for and against storing nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain
  • The pros and cons of storing nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain, including how the land and citizens of Nevada would or would not be affected
  • A recommendation for whether the Yucca Mountain facility should be reopened
