RDG 351 Wk 1 – Signature Assignment: Early Childhood Literacy Presentation

Scenario: You are currently teaching preschool at a local school district and your school superintendent has asked you to develop a brief presentation to share with new and incoming early childhood teachers during the New Teacher Training Institute at the beginning of the upcoming school year. Your superintendent has asked you to do the following in your presentation:

  • Summarize each of the 3 main approaches to literacy instruction, including their key characteristics and possible pros and cons.
  • Describe the typical stages of language development in children.
  • Explain current language acquisition theories.
  • Select 2 pieces of children’s literature to use as read-alouds, and briefly explain how each might serve as a resource to teach speaking, language, and/or listening skills in an early childhood classroom.
  • For each piece of literature, create 1-2 objectives and an activity that could be used to address speaking, language, or listening skills.

Choose 1 of the following methods to share your presentation:

  • Create a 5- to 7-minute video of yourself sharing the information. Before recording yourself, create a Microsoft® Word document of speaking points you will follow.
  • Create a 15- to 20-slide presentation, such as Microsoft® PowerPoint® or Prezi, that includes speaker notes.

Note: For both presentation options, include the reference information for your 2 selected children’s books, along with any other resources consulted.

Format your references according to APA guidelines.
