Appendix A

This week you engage in a family communication activity. You may choose from three different assignment options. Select Option A, Option B, or Option C for your assignment.

Option A: Parent–Teacher Conference

Attend an early childhood parent–teacher conference.

Note how the conference is conducted by the educator.

  • What materials, student work samples, and written communication tools does the educator use to communicate with the parent or family member?
  • How and when are parent and family questions and concerns addressed?
  • If the educator has concerns, how and when are those addressed?

Write a 350- to 700-word paper summarizing your observations of and responding to the questions about an early childhood parent–teacher conference.

Format your paper according to APA guidelines.

Option B: Classroom Observation

Observe an infant, preschool, or kindergarten classroom at arrival or dismissal for at least 30 minutes.

Watch for what occurs prior to and after the actual arrival or dismissal time. Which communication tools or techniques are used by the educator to relay critical information from school to home such as happy grams, daily behavior reports, verbal comments, or impromptu hallway meetings called by the parent?

Write a 350- to 700-word paper summarizing your observations of and responding to previous questions about arrival or dismissal in an early childhood education setting.

Format your paper according to APA guidelines.

Option C: Parent and Family Communication Tools

Gather examples of parent and family communication tools used in an early childhood setting. These may include newsletters, websites, letters home, progress reports, school notes, happy grams, or other devices. Include samples as appropriate.

Write a 350- to 700-word paper describing the content of the various tools used in parent and family communication.

Format your paper according to APA guidelines.
