ENG 100 Wk 1 Discussion – Reading & Writing to Learn

Welcome to the first week of ENG/100. This week, you begin to explore how you feel about writing, in both personal and academic settings, and you get to practice in both areas.

Beginning this week and in each week of the course, you will do some writing in a journal (either typed or hand-written). Don’t panic! These entries won’t be graded, but they are required so you begin to build a habit of writing and can get more comfortable with the process.

The writing skills inventory this week gives you a chance to consider where you feel strong about writing and where you feel you need support. And you will find links to specific tools and resources to help you improve your writing, no matter your skill level.

Tip: As you approach this week’s reading assignments, be sure to note the specific page ranges within each chapter for you to read. Of course, you can read the entire chapter if you want to, but the assignments are only for specific pages.

Jump into this first week, share your thoughts, begin your writing practice, and reach out to your faculty member if you have any questions or concerns. Happy writing!

Post a total of 3 substantive responses over 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post and 2 replies to classmates or your faculty member.

Due Thursday

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

  • What knowledge do you have about yourself as a learner, and what strategies have you learned that support your study of reading and writing? What are some strengths you bring to the table as you begin to write? Can you think of any areas you may need to improve?

Due Monday

Post 2 replies to classmates or your faculty member. Be constructive and professional.

ENG 100 Wk 2 Discussion – Reading and Writing to Reflect

Welcome to Week 2! You’ve already completed 20% of the course! Last week, you had an opportunity to take a look at how you feel about your writing skills and identify and practice strategies for reading and writing. This week, you will continue to apply those strategies in the discussion and assignments, and you will practice your own writing through your journal and the literacy narrative.

As you move through the activities this week, continue to use the resources provided within the class to strengthen your writing mechanics. With the selected readings from the University Library, you will take a look at prewriting techniques, and you will find some focused tutorials for grammar and topic sentences in the Optional Resources section.

If you need help, don’t hesitate to reach out to your instructor for guidance and direction as you move through this week and complete the readings and assignments.

Post a total of 3 substantive responses over 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post and 2 replies to classmates or your faculty member.

Due Thursday

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

  • Read one of the narratives from the University Library. Consider the reading strategies you learned about in Week 1, and apply your strategy of choice to your selected model. What was the narrative about? What parts of the narrative most connect for you? Why or how?

Please use a citation generator, such as the one in the Center for Writing Excellence, to reference the article in your response. Your citation should be in APA format.

ENG 100 Wk 3 Discussion – Reading and Writing in College Communications

The last two weeks, you have done some informal writing and focused on some of your own experiences. This week, you move forward and begin the practice of responding to other people’s writing. You will have a chance to form your opinion about another author’s article and develop a thesis statement that justifies your opinion. You’ll find resources throughout the week to help you do these things.

This week you will begin to use the standards of writing in an academic setting, including paper formatting, citations, and references. There are several resources and templates to help you become comfortable with APA formatting. And as always, reach out to your instructor or the University librarians with any questions you have as you go through this week’s assignments and activities.

Enjoy Week 3!

ENG 100 Wk 4 Discussion – Reading & Writing to Leverage Career Opportunities

Welcome to Week 4! This week you will expand your writing practice to include writing that may be directly relevant to your career. So far, you have created a narrative and a response. At the end of this week, you will have written a cover letter that you can use if and when you discover a career opportunity of interest.

You will also have the time this week to consider and discuss the various types of writing we do, and how each of them is similar and different from the others. The readings in this week are also important as they will help you prepare for next week’s essay assignment.

Continue to challenge yourself to grow and improve your writing skills this week, and take advantage of all the resources the University has to offer. Happy writing!

ENG 100 Wk 5 Discussion – Reflection and Resources

You have reached Week 5, and you are surely a different writer now than you were at the start of the course! You have implemented a weekly journal practice, created your own narrative, responded to another author’s writing and supported your position, and created a cover letter that highlights your career skills. Impressive!

As this course winds down, you will finish building your portfolio by completing an academic essay using support from the article you are reading. You can build upon the writing you did earlier in the course to craft this essay. You also have the opportunity to reflect on your progress as a writer and consider where you feel there is still room to grow.

Congratulations on all the work you have done through this course to develop your skills as an academic writer. You have created a good foundation on which to continue to build your identity as a scholarly writer. Keep writing!
