ENG 100 Wk 1 Discussion – Essay Topic

Post a total of 3 substantive responses over 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post and 2 replies to other students.

Due Thursday

In ENG/100, you will be introduced to the fundamentals of essay writing, and over the next 5 weeks, you will learn how to write topic sentences, construct paragraphs, and generate thesis statements. You will support your ideas, revise your drafts, and end the course with a completed essay.

Why are these skills necessary? Essays are the gears on which academic work turns. Essays share information, test new ideas, and debate controversial topics. Writers write because they live in a real world with real problems. Always remember, the broad goal of an academic essay is always the same: to put us in a better position to think critically and take practical actions.

Consider an essay you have read that was designed to solve a problem.

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

  • Could you tell, before reading the entire essay, what the author was going to talk about?
  • What did the author of the essay do to introduce the topic of the essay, and where in the essay could you identify that topic?
  • Why is it important that an author picks narrow topic or research question for an essay?

Due Monday

Reply to at least 2 of your classmates. Be constructive and professional in your responses.

ENG 100 Wk 2 Discussion – Thesis Statement

Post a total of 3 substantive responses over 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post and 2 replies to other students.

Due Thursday

Does the success of an essay really rest on a 25 word thesis statement? It can!

A thesis statement is more than a single sentence. A thesis is a clear statement of ideas, and it represents the command center of the essay. All other parts of the essay, from the topic sentences to the supporting details, take their “orders” from a thesis.

While there’s no law or rule that dictates the exact way a thesis should look, the best thesis statements do two things:

First, they establish the essay’s main point or claim. This part of a thesis might look like this: Vaccinations should be mandatory to attend public school.

Second, a thesis should provide the core reasons that support the claim. The full thesis, then, might look like this: Vaccinations should be mandatory to attend public school because they are safe, effective, and affordable.

A good thesis tells the reader both the “what” and the “why” of the essay, and if a thesis is successful, it lays the groundwork for the topic sentences in the body paragraphs, as well as the types of details that will be needed to support the claim.

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

  • Because so much depends on a thesis statements and topic sentences, discuss some effective strategies for coming up with them.
  • What might you list as the qualities of an effective thesis, and how do you know when a thesis needs to be improved?
  • Why is it important to make sure that research supports your thesis?
  • What might happen if a writer approaches an essay without a thesis?

ENG 100 Wk 3 Discussion – Body Paragraphs

Post a total of 3 substantive responses over 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post and 2 replies to other students.

Due Thursday

One way to think about an essay is as a scaffold. It is built from the ground up starting with words, which then build phrases and sentences, which in turn create solid paragraphs, which finally result in a completed essay.

Last week, you worked on creating a thesis statement, as well as topic sentences. This week, you look at developing the body paragraphs that sit between the introduction and conclusion.

The body paragraphs are the real substance of an essay. A thesis makes an assertion, but the proof of an essay’s strength is in the details within the body paragraphs. The body paragraphs contain the majority of your facts and evidence to support the claim made in the thesis. In each body paragraph, you present a single reason from your thesis and back up that reason with logic and support from reliable resources.

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

  • What are the characteristics of a strong body paragraph?
  • How do the details in the body paragraph relate to the topic sentence, and how does the topic sentence in a body paragraph relate to the thesis?
  • How can you make sure that a body paragraph has unity?

ENG 100 Wk 4 Discussion – Introductions

Post a total of 3 substantive responses over 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post and 2 replies to other students.

Due Thursday

Last week, you worked on taking the reasons from your thesis statement and developing them into body paragraphs. Those paragraphs, however, are not the first thing the reader sees. A reader sees your title first and then your introduction.

Good introductions do not just start a discussion. They capture the attention of the reader. They provide interesting facts, background information, and the thesis statement. They draw the reader into the rest of the essay.

While the introduction creates a reader’s first impression, the conclusion provides a lasting impression. The conclusion tells the reader why the essay matters. You can think of the introduction and conclusion as “bookends” for your body paragraphs.

As you develop the introduction and conclusion for your essay, don’t forget about your body paragraphs. They need to be revised, edited, and supported with research. With each draft you write, the body paragraphs should incorporate feedback and any additional information you have gathered.

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

  • In essay writing, why are first and last impressions so important?
  • What are some specific techniques you can use in an introduction to grab a reader’s attention?
  • Why does an essay follow a particular structure of introducing ideas, discussing and supporting them, and ending with a conclusion?

ENG 100 Wk 5 Discussion – Essay Revisions

Post a total of 3 substantive responses over 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post and 2 replies to other students.

Due Thursday

Being human means making mistakes, and while they aren’t fun, mistakes can become building blocks for success. When we pay attention to them, we can make improvements.

Last week, you put together all the components of your essay. This week, you will revise your work. As you approach your revisions, consider the following:

Does your thesis set up your essay for strong topic sentences and body paragraphs? Are the reasons you state in your thesis distinct, but related, and are they supported by research? Have you applied the feedback from your instructor to make your essay stronger?

As you revise, remember to also edit your work for grammar, punctuation, mechanics, and spelling.

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

  • As you begin your revisions, what do you see as the biggest obstacles?
  • How can you overcome these obstacles?
  • Why is it sometimes difficult for us to see the errors in our own work?
  • What are some effective ways to both seek and apply constructive criticism of our writing?
