Post a total of 3 substantive responses over 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post and 2 replies to other students.

Due Thursday

One way to think about an essay is as a scaffold. It is built from the ground up starting with words, which then build phrases and sentences, which in turn create solid paragraphs, which finally result in a completed essay.

Last week, you worked on creating a thesis statement, as well as topic sentences. This week, you look at developing the body paragraphs that sit between the introduction and conclusion.

The body paragraphs are the real substance of an essay. A thesis makes an assertion, but the proof of an essay’s strength is in the details within the body paragraphs. The body paragraphs contain the majority of your facts and evidence to support the claim made in the thesis. In each body paragraph, you present a single reason from your thesis and back up that reason with logic and support from reliable resources.

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

  • What are the characteristics of a strong body paragraph?
  • How do the details in the body paragraph relate to the topic sentence, and how does the topic sentence in a body paragraph relate to the thesis?
  • How can you make sure that a body paragraph has unity?
