ENG 100 Wk 4 Discussion – Introductions

Post a total of 3 substantive responses over 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post and 2 replies to other students.

Due Thursday

Last week, you worked on taking the reasons from your thesis statement and developing them into body paragraphs. Those paragraphs, however, are not the first thing the reader sees. A reader sees your title first and then your introduction.

Good introductions do not just start a discussion. They capture the attention of the reader. They provide interesting facts, background information, and the thesis statement. They draw the reader into the rest of the essay.

While the introduction creates a reader’s first impression, the conclusion provides a lasting impression. The conclusion tells the reader why the essay matters. You can think of the introduction and conclusion as “bookends” for your body paragraphs.

As you develop the introduction and conclusion for your essay, don’t forget about your body paragraphs. They need to be revised, edited, and supported with research. With each draft you write, the body paragraphs should incorporate feedback and any additional information you have gathered.

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

  • In essay writing, why are first and last impressions so important?
  • What are some specific techniques you can use in an introduction to grab a reader’s attention?
  • Why does an essay follow a particular structure of introducing ideas, discussing and supporting them, and ending with a conclusion?
