If there is any task that best captures what it means to be human, the act of creative writing might be it. There is no other species that expresses emotion in the stanzas of a poem, teaches history through a five act play, or constructs a fantasy world through a series of novels. In the real world, a report tells readers what happened. Creative writers, by contrast, create altogether new happenings. Such writers taken inspiration from real events, people, and places, but weave entirely new things out of them.

What does it mean to be a creative writer? What is the difference between creative writing and other modes of writing? How would you define creative reading, and why must writers be creative readers as well?

As you prepare to write an original poem this week, let’s begin with a simple question. What is a poem? Some people would say poetry is a set of stanzas that have meter and rhyme. However, not all poetry rhymes, and not all of it has a consistent rhythm. Still, others would describe poetry as an emotional form of writing, but some poems do not seem to evoke emotion at all. Many people would say poetry uses symbols and figurative language, but again, these features are not universal to poetry. The point is that poetry is not as rigid a term as one might think:

In your view, what characterizes a piece of writing as a poem? Is there any single element that a poem must have in order to be considered a poem? What characteristics distinguish a poem from prose? Why do you think that poetry can be more challenging for readers?

ENG 240 Wk 3 Discussion – Writing a Short Story

Post a total of 3 substantive responses over 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post and 2 replies to other students.

Due Thursday

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

What are the makings of a strong short story?

Edgar Allan Poe (famed American short story writer and poet) believed that a good story depended on a “unity of effect.” For Poe, a story was a carefully constructed set of parts that worked together for a common purpose or theme. The more unified a story was, the more successful it was. The parts must work together for the benefit of the whole.

How would you define the elements of a successful short story? Considering essential elements, such as plot, setting, dialogue, and character, what does it mean to say that a short story is successful? Which elements within a short story that are more important than others to a story’s success? Provide some examples.

ENG 240 Wk 4 Discussion – Challenges in Playwriting

Post a total of 3 substantive responses over 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post and 2 replies to other students.

Due Thursday

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

In most forms of creative writing, writers are bound by a single means of communication: written language. Playwriting is different. A play relies on audio and visual elements. Scenes are designed, spaced, and illuminated in a particular way. Audiences must focus on how each scene looks on stage. Performers deliver lines with their own inflection. A play engages the senses more than any other mode of writing. Perhaps most importantly, plays are dependent on what the characters say. Monologues and dialogues are the essence of a play.

What are some challenges (in terms of how to develop plot, theme, and character) that might be unique to the playwright? What advantages does a playwright have as opposed to one who writes poems or novels? What do you see as the most important elements used in writing and presenting successful plays?

ENG 240 Wk 5 Discussion – Fiction vs. Nonfiction

Post a total of 3 substantive responses over 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post and 2 replies to other students.

Due Thursday

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

In previous weeks, you spent time developing various kinds of creative writing. You focused on images and events not designed to be taken as reality. As you’ve written short stories, poetries, and plays, you’ve imagined places, events, conversations, and characters that (though perhaps inspired by reality) are made-up. Different modes of writing can also cross over and influence each other. This week, your focus will be on creative nonfiction. This means that you’ll write about reality (as you see it), but through a creative approach. So far in this class, you have learned how to use powerful images, tap into universal human emotions, relay exciting sequences of events, and string together details in pursuit of a common theme.

What do you see as the primary differences among fiction, nonfiction, and creative nonfiction? Why might creative non-fiction appeal more to the average reader?
