ENG 295 Wk 1 Discussion – POETRY & Canon

Wk 1 Discussion – Due Thursda

Post a total of 3 substantive responses 200 words min. each.  Answer all the questions below in your initial post and include at least one quote from the required readings and one quote from the textbook.

Due Thursday

Respond to the following in a minimum of 200 words and use at least one example from the required readings:

Children’s poetry can stimulate a child’s imagination and have lasting influence on how a child views nature. Some of the earliest literature we learn as children is in the form of poetry.

In literature, the term canon refers to the most important works in a specific genre. They also refer to the works nearly everyone knows such as A visit from St. Nicholas by Clement Moore (1823, also called Twas the Night Before Christmas)

List two poems you believe should be included in the canon of children’s literature. Why did you make those choices?

What was your favorite childhood poem? Is it part of the canon of children’s poetry? What effect did this poem have on your imagination, views on nature or animals, or how you felt?

Does the way the poem is structured have any bearing on why it is your favorite from childhood? Why?

Ever heard of The Giving Tree, “A Boy Named Sue” or “The Unicorn Song?” These and soooo many more are by Shel Silverstein. Here is one of my favorite Children’s Poems by Shel Silverstein. Here is a link to the Shel Silverstein website. If you don’t know his poetry, please take a few minutes to read a couple of them here. How do these modern poems compare to the ones from this week’s readings?

ENG 295 Wk 2 Discussion – Illustrations

Due Thursday

Respond to the following in a minimum of 200 words and use at least one example from the required readings – Post a total of 3 substantive responses.

Children’s literature is often enhanced by the use of illustrations. In fact, some children’s literature could be described as more image than narrative. The use of imagery in literature can highlight important concepts within the story.

Think about your favorite picture book. Is it part of the canon of children’s picture books?

How would your feelings about this book be different if there were no pictures? How do the images enhance the story and your understanding of it?

Who’s the boss?

  • What if someone told you can only read these books and not these others?
  • What if every reading choice was not a true choice?
  • What if the government committees picked the books for you? What if your parents picked for you?
  • What if librarians and teachers were the ones picking everything you read?
  • What if they decided not only you can’t read a book but no one can (look up banned or challenged books)?

Well, with children’s literature, everyone is “The Boss” but the child. How does that impact a child’s life? What are the pros and cons?

ENG 295 Wk 3 Discussion – Fairytales, Myths, or Legends

Respond to the following in a minimum of 200 words and use at least one example from the required readings – Post a total of 3 substantive responses.

Some children’s literature can be categorized into fairy tales (featuring elements such as magic, mermaids, or unicorns), myths (based on a religion or belief system, such as Greek mythology), or legends (potentially based on real people or events but largely exaggerated, such as Robin Hood). Often, these types of stories, in addition to entertaining, have a moral lesson and can teach the reader about the historical and social climate at the time they were written.

What are some contemporary fairytales, myths, or legends? Give some examples. How do these reflect current values and social issues? How have fairy tales, legends, and myths changed over time? What can we learn about a society’s history and social customs based on the tales that were written in a certain period?

Any Percy Jackson fans?

These types of tales might be even more influential today than when they were first told. Where do you see the evidence of this? Where do you see modern interpretations and implementations of these timeless themes?

ENG 295 Wk 4 Discussion – Fiction

Post a total of 3 substantive responses.

Due Thursday

Respond to the following in a minimum of 200 words and use at least one example from the required readings – Post a total of 3 substantive responses.

Science-fiction/fantasy (SFF) and literary fiction are both genres which help sharpen children’s imagination as well as develop their emotional maturity. Reading literature also helps teach children’s compassion and empathy by allowing them to imagine life from another perspective.

How do contemporary works of Young Adult and Juvenile fiction (YA) like The Twilight Series, Harry Potter Series or The Hunger Games Series  compare with earlier works of fiction in helping children develop their imagination and moral compass? Provide at least one example to support your position. Which works – earlier works of fiction or more recent – do you feel are more helpful in developing empathy and emotional maturity? Again, provide an example.

And/Or, If you have read Harry Potter ONLY

Due Thursday

Respond to the following in a minimum of 200 words and use at least one example from the required readings:

How has the Harry Potter Series changed the face of Children’s Literature? How does the Harry Potter Series compare with earlier works of fiction in helping children develop their imagination and moral compass? Provide at least one example to support your position. Which works – earlier or HP – do you feel are more helpful in developing empathy and emotional maturity? Again, provide an example.

Harry Potter has been seen by some critics as a Christ Allegory (google it!). What does that mean? Can you see any comparisons?

ENG 295 Wk 5 Discussion – Children’s Literature Nonfiction & Issues

Respond to the following in a minimum of 200 words and use at least one example from the required readings:

As with all literature, children’s literature can provide a medium in which to discuss a variety of issues ranging from race to sexual orientation to gender stereotyping. Approaching these issues through a fictional story can allow children to become familiar with new terms and ideas in a less threatening setting.

Should children’s literature ever be censored? If not, why not? If so, who do you think should be the censors, and how should they decide what topics are censored? What about the case of 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher?

How important is culture in children’s literature? Why should we include works from various cultures in the canon of children’s literature? How does including literature from various cultures influence the discussion on the social issues covered in children’s literature?

Nonfiction is very exciting for most children and DK Publishing have a great deal to do with this. Watch this video (don’t forget to use your pause button to really check this out!) and post your comments on this book here.

Find a nonficiton book that you consider children’s literature. Read it (or watch the reading on YouTube) and post a review of the book (with a link) here. Why do you consider it children’s literature? Is it good? In what ways is it good lit and what ways is it not?
