Scenarios

Scenario 1: Functions of Management 

According to Jones, G..R. (2020) the outcome of the control process is the ability to measure performance accurately and regulate organizational efficiency and effectiveness.

Share your response in a minimum of 175 words and include citations. Be constructive and professional.

Discussion:

  • Consider the 4 functions of management (e.g., planning, organizing, leading, and controlling).
  • How would you characterize your current or past supervisor’s approach to management? For example, which particular management tasks and roles does this person perform most often? What management skills does the manager have? How does this approach affect a global environment?

Scenario 2: Management Levels 

To perform the four managerial tasks efficiently and effectively, organizations group or differentiate their managers in two main ways—by level in hierarchy and by type of skill. The three levels of managers are first-line managers, middle managers, and top managers—arranged in a hierarchy (Jones, G. R., 2020).

  • Describe the difference between efficiency and effectiveness and identify real organizations you think are, or are not, efficient and/or effective.
  • In what ways can managers at each of the three levels of management contribute to organizational efficiency and effectiveness?

Scenario 3: Managerial Skills 

Jones, G. R. (2020) notes today, continuing management education and training, including training in advanced information technology (IT), are an integral step in building managerial skills, because new theories and techniques are constantly being developed to improve organizational effectiveness

  • Distinguish between three kinds of managerial skills, and explain why managers are divided into different departments to perform their tasks more efficiently and effectively.
  • Identify an organization that you believe is high performing and one you believe is low performing. Give five reasons why you think the performance levels of the two organizations differ so much.

Scenario 4: Managerial Roles

Jones, G. R. (2020) notes managerial roles include three key types as identified by Mintzberg: 1). Decisional managerial roles; 2). Interpersonal managerial roles; and 3). Informational managerial roles.

Discussion:

  1. In what ways do you think managers’ jobs have changed the most over the last 10 years? Why have these changes occurred?
  2. Are the tasks, roles, and skills of your supervisor are appropriate for the particular job he or she performs? How could your manager improve his or her task performance?
  3. If you were opening a new restaurant:

  • Determine what each partner’s managerial role in the restaurant will be. For example, who will be responsible for the necessary departments and specific activities?
  • Describe your management hierarchy.
