HCS 465 Wk 1 Discussion Board (2019 New)

Due Thursday (20 pts)

Write a 175- to 265-word response to the following:

As we get started, I want to do some level setting. We often hear people talk about ‘doing their research’ by searching the Internet for existing information. An example might be searching Consumer Reports to help decide which car to purchase. I am sure you did quite a bit of reading before deciding to enroll in UOP or pick a major.

Or, you have written tons of research papers by now. In doing this, you find published sources to support the ideas that you put forth in your academic writing.

For this class, I want you to please put both of those ideas about research aside. We will be discussing scientific research that follows a specific process to generate NEW information. This is information that we couldn’t find in an Internet search. Research, for the purposes of our class, seeks to answer a question to improve the delivery of health care and follows the research process that we will study. Scientific research that will be the focus of our time together seeks to answer questions such as:

Is this new drug better than the current standard of care?

How important it is social support in managing pain for cancer patients?

Can an electronic medical records system reduce prescribing errors?

Does chocolate really improve mood?

I have copied the steps in the research process below. We will draw on these for the rest of the class.

Please pick any step in the research process below and write a 175- to 265-word response describing that step in the process.

1)  Determine a topic

2)  Provide background and formulate focus questions

3)  Design study

4)  Collect data

5)  Analyze data

6)  Interpret data and generate conclusions

7)  Inform others

Due Monday (20 pts)

Read and respond to at least two of your classmates’ discussion posts. Be constructive and professional with your thoughts, feedback, or suggestions.

Due Thursday (20 pts)

Write a 175- to 265-word response to the following questions:

Please respond to ONE of the following discussion prompts.

Review recently published articles on ScienceDaily.com. Summarize a research study that interested you for the class. What element from the research process can you describe for the selected study? Can you describe the study hypothesis?

NOTE: When responding to the article summaries, please stay focused on the research process and avoid spinning off into the discussion of specific diseases or disorders which are out of scope for our class. Thank you.

OR

What is sampling in health care research? Why would a researcher sample a portion of a population when conducting research? Can you differentiate between a sample and a population? Please describe at least 3 different sampling techniques.

OR

Please define and describe at least 3 different data collection methods. Please provide a hypothesis that could be tested or a research question that could be answered in health care and suggest how data could be collected to test the hypothesis or answer the research question.

Please respond to ONE of the following:

How might a health care administrator use the findings of peer reviewed research in general? Please describe the key findings of one of the articles that you used in your annotated bibliography from week 2 and discuss how the findings would be useful to a health care administrator.

OR

Validity and reliability have very specific meanings in health care research. Based on our course material, please discuss validity, reliability, internal validity and external validity. Why are these concepts important in health care research?

HCS 465 Wk 4 Discussion Board (2019 New)

Due Thursday (20 pts)

Option 1: This week we are not talking about consent for routine procedures, we are talking about informed consent to participate in research. This is when a patient agrees to participate in the research process that we discussed in week 1 and have been applying throughout the class. If we think about the various methodologies, a patient might consent to participate in a research study testing a new drug. An individual might agree to have their medical regards reviewed for a historical research study.

I want to make sure to draw a clear distinction. A person cannot participate in research without informed consent. With this in mind, what are the key elements of informed consent? How does informed consent to participate in research differ from standard consent for a routine medical procedure?

Option 2: Based on the Course Strategy Guide, describe one of the key ethical guidelines from our class this week. What did you find surprising or interesting about the development, evolution or genesis of this guideline?
