This week, we explore some of the positive and negative aspects of President Ronald Reagan’s economic policies. Reaganomics remains controversial even today, with some arguing that the dramatic increase of the national debt under Reagan cannot be overcome with his more positive achievements of job growth and a construction boom. Furthermore, cheap gasoline, cheap appliances, and cheap credit stimulated a “Yuppie” culture of unrestricted greed and consumer spending.

Consider the broad effects of President Regan’s economic policies.

• How were the wealthy affected? The middle class? The working class?
• How were women affected, particularly in terms of working outside the home?
• How were unions affected?
• Would you agree or disagree that materialism, public image, and economic prosperity still drive the American vision of success? Why or why not? Provide specific examples in your response.
