As we begin to explore personality theories within psychology, we start with psychoanalytic theories. Freud believed that there were three components to personality: Id, Ego, and Superego. He also developed the concept of defense mechanisms.
- What do you see as the differences among the Id, the Ego, and the Superego? How do these components of personality relate to Freud’s concept of defense mechanisms? Recall a time when you used defense mechanisms. Was it helpful in dealing with a stressful event? Why or why not?

In Week one, you were introduced to the psychoanalytic theories of personality. Week Two examines the psychoanalytic-social theories of personality and the main components of each. It is helpful to note that the psychoanalytic-social theories evolved from and built upon Freud’s ideas.
- Provide a specific aspect in the theories of Adler, Horney, and Erickson that differs from Freud’s theories. How are the theories of Adler, Horney, and Erickson similar to one another? Based on this week’s readings, which theory do you think is best at explaining personality?

In the first two weeks, we focused on personality theories based on stages of development and the relationship of the individual with others. This week, the focus shifts to the influence of genetics on personality. It is common to see physical similarities among family members. For example, they may have the same complexion or eye color. But what about personality?
- Do you believe personality traits are inherited? In terms of personality, what is meant by ‘nature versus nurture’? How does Evolutionary Psychology explain individuals’ personalities and behaviors? Is there a benefit to explaining human behavior with integrated theories of nature and nurture?

In Week 4, you are introduced to the behavioral perspective of personality. The readings this week focus on behavioral and the social-cognitive theories of several theorists, including Skinner, Kelly, Mischel, and Bandura.
- Based on your readings this week, provide a specific example of how the environment can cause behavior. B.F. Skinner’s work on Operant Conditioning introduces the concept of reinforcement and punishment. Discuss an example of results obtained through reinforcement or through punishment according to Skinner’s theory.

This is the final week of the class, and you have been introduced to a variety of personality theories. Thank you for working hard and engaging in these discussions. As we conclude the course, this week focuses on the humanistic perspective of personality, with special focus on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Maslow’s theory focuses on a unique perspective of personality and is based on motivation.
Take a moment to refresh your understanding of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.
- Maslow’s pyramid consists of five needs. Which of those do you think it most important to the overall well-being of an individual? What is the difference between a need and a want? Please share an example. Finally, how would you explain self-actualization? Do you think every individual is able to reach self-actualization? Why or why not?
