Imagine that you are a general education teacher in an elementary school. Your school curriculum has introduced the new concept of integrating health and physical education with other subject areas. You are asked to introduce this concept and apply it to your classrooms in the coming weeks. As a part of this program, you have to prepare a 2-week unit that focuses on the academic area of your choice and incorporate at least 1physical education skill competency and 1 health education theme. Remember, planning a unit typically means that you are integrating related concepts from multiple subject areas to reinforce them or teach them from a different perspective. This requires you to take the time to find the connections between subject areas and think critically about how to incorporate them into the lessons.

 

This assignment is divided into 3 parts. Here is what you must do:

 

Part 1: Unit Outline

 

Create a 2-page outline for your unit that includes the following:

  • Physical education skill competency incorporated (may include more than 1):

  • Rhythmic movement skills
  • Health education theme incorporated (may include more than 1):
  • Mental and emotional health
  • Personal health
  • Nutrition
  • Apps and technology resources for nutritional help
  • Injury prevention and safety
  • Substance use and abuse prevention
  • Lesson summaries for 6 lessons, to include:
  • Topic
  • Brief description of learning
  • Activities that support academic subject, physical education skill competency, and health education theme
  • Assessment summary, to include:
  • Formative assessment options for each lesson (must vary in delivery)
  • Summative assessment options for unit

 

Part 2: Unit Overview

 

Write a 1-page overview of your unit that includes the following:

  • Unit statement that describes the following:
  • Connection between the academic subject, physical education skill competency, and health education theme
  • Relevance of each lesson to the overarching unit theme
  • Unit strategy for technology integration

 

Part 3: Family Communication

 

Write a 1-page letter to families explaining the unit of study you have planned. Address the following topics:

  • Rationale for incorporating the physical education skill competency and the health education theme with the academic subject
  • Highlights of activities and/or special projects that will be included
  • Reinforcement activities for home
  • Information on video resources for physical activity like dance and yoga to practice at home
