RDG 420 Wk 3 Discussion – Emergent and Beginning Readers

Post a total of 3 substantive responses over 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post and 2 replies to classmates or your faculty member.

Due Thursday

Imagine that you are currently teaching first grade in a local public school. It’s the beginning of the year and most of your students are at grade level. The few students who are not at grade level have already been flagged for Title I reading services. A new girl was just added to your class last week. According to her mom, she attended a private kindergarten the year before but much of her year was spent at home receiving virtual instruction due to illness. So far, you’ve noticed that she can’t write all her letters, struggles to blend CVC words, has a hard time identifying rhyming words, and usually just looks at the pictures in books without attempting to read any words during independent reading time.

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

  • What characteristics would you expect to see in a reader who should be at the emergent and beginning stages of reading?
  • What are some initial steps you would take to learn more about this reader’s specific needs?
  • What assessment tools might you use to learn more about her as a reader? Why would you choose those?
  • What are some approaches to teaching phonemic awareness and phonics that you feel might benefit this student?

Review the College’s Conceptual Framework.

  • How does this topic link to the College’s Conceptual Framework and the framework’s philosophical relationship to effective teacher preparation?

Due Monday
